‘It’s hard to write a compelling, original piece of fiction based on a real experience of doing drugs with your friends’, says Kelly Luce. As an editorial assistant for the O. Henry Prize, she read every piece of fiction in every literary magazine published in English for a year. If that’s not quite the claim the title makes, it’s still a lot of short stories, and enough to make such incisive observations on the genre worth paying attention to for those of us who write in it.
